Switzerland reached the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Colombia in a penalty shootout following 120 minutes without a goal. Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who has operated as back-up to Yann Sommer at international level, claimed the Superior Player of the Match award for his decisive contributions.

The round-of-16 clash produced few clear-cut chances despite both teams seeking a breakthrough. Colombia, who had conceded only once in their entire campaign, defended resolutely while posing threats on the counter. However, Kobel repeatedly denied their attackers, including Liverpool winger Luis Díaz, to preserve the stalemate through normal and extra time.

Spot-kicks Decide Tense Affair

The contest ultimately required penalties to separate the sides. The shootout turned on Kobel’s athletic stop from Cucho Hernández, which followed earlier misses from Davinson Sánchez and Manuel Akanji. Ruben Vargas, previously with German club Augsburg, kept his composure to convert the final kick and send the Swiss through to face the holders.

Colombia depart the competition having shipped just one goal across their entire campaign, a remarkable defensive record that makes their elimination particularly harsh. Their solitary concession came during a 3-1 group-stage victory against Uzbekistan. Manager Néstor Lorenzo’s squad also achieved the unique distinction of playing matches at venues across all three host nations. Their defensive solidity, which saw them concede fewer goals than any other eliminated side, ultimately proved insufficient against Kobel’s heroics.

Return to the Last Eight

This victory marks Switzerland’s first appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals since they hosted the tournament in 1954, ending a 71-year absence from this stage of the competition. Murat Yakin’s outfit will now attempt to defeat holders Argentina, who lifted the trophy in Qatar three years ago.

The quarter-final fixture takes place on Thursday, following a one-day break in the tournament schedule for the first time since the competition began last month. Medical staff hope SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi will recover from injury in time to feature against the defending champions.

European teams dominate the remaining bracket, accounting for six of the eight sides still competing. Morocco and Argentina represent the only non-European nations left in the competition.
