Red Bull are accelerating their search for a new Head of Global Soccer as Jürgen Klopp edges closer to becoming Germany’s national team manager. The Austrian conglomerate, which oversees clubs including RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, must appoint a successor to maintain continuity across its football portfolio.

Krösche leads the race

According to Sport Bild, Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche has emerged as the clear favourite for the position. The 45-year-old fits the profile perfectly, bringing an extensive network, sharp eye for talent and proven transfer market expertise.

Krösche is already familiar with the Red Bull ecosystem. He worked as RB Leipzig’s sporting director between 2019 and 2021 before departing following internal disagreements. However, his rapport with Red Bull chief Oliver Mintzlaff has since healed, removing any potential obstacle to his return. Despite this reconciliation, the German publication notes that no concrete talks have taken place between the two parties so far.

Should negotiations progress, Krösche would bring current Bundesliga experience from his role as Eintracht Frankfurt’s board member for sport. His understanding of the German market combined with international connections aligns with Red Bull’s requirements for overseeing their multi-club operations.

Henry and Schmidt alternatives

The shortlist extends beyond the German market. Thierry Henry remains under consideration despite his limited managerial track record. The former New York Red Bulls forward previously coached Monaco and France’s youth teams. He currently combines punditry work with his investment role at Italian club Como.

Roger Schmidt offers a profile built upon extensive coaching experience. The 59-year-old Austrian previously led Red Bull Salzburg and has since managed Bayer Leverkusen, PSV Eindhoven and Benfica. He presently serves as Global Football Advisor for Japan’s J.League, giving him a broad international perspective.

What happens next

Red Bull must act decisively to ensure smooth leadership transition. With Klopp expected to assume the Germany post imminently, the organisation requires a figure capable of steering sporting strategy across its global network. Whether they opt for Krösche’s sporting director expertise, Henry’s commercial appeal, or Schmidt’s coaching pedigree, the appointment will shape the group’s approach across the upcoming campaign.
