Lille OSC have reached an agreement with Sevilla FC to sign centre-back Tanguy Nianzou, with the 24-year-old now set to undergo a medical examination ahead of completing his transfer.
The French defender is poised to return to Ligue 1 four years after leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Bayern Munich. Should he pass his medical, Nianzou will sign his contract with Les Dogues next week, marking the end of his troubled spell in Spain.
Sevilla forced to sell amid financial strain
The Andalusian club are navigating serious financial difficulties that have necessitated a reduction in their wage bill. Despite Nianzou being tied to a contract that runs until 2027, Sevilla have adopted a flexible approach to negotiations and are not demanding a substantial transfer fee to facilitate his departure.
The deal represents crucial financial relief for the Spanish side, allowing them to remove a significant salary from their books while the player secures an opportunity to revive his career in his home country.
Career stalled by persistent injuries
Nianzou emerged through the Paris Saint-Germain academy before moving to Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2020. However, his time in Germany was severely disrupted by physical setbacks, restricting him to just 28 appearances across all competitions during his two-year stay.
The defender joined Sevilla in 2022 hoping to establish himself, but fitness problems continued to plague his progress. Over four seasons in La Liga, he managed only 62 appearances, preventing him from demonstrating the consistency required at the highest level.
Now 24, Nianzou will hope that a return to French football provides the stable environment needed to finally overcome his injury record and fulfil the potential he showed during his development in Paris.
