West Ham United and Celtic have emerged as leading contenders to sign Stade de Reims defensive midfielder Mory Gbane, with the French club prepared to sanction his departure following relegation to Ligue 2.

The Ivory Coast international joined Reims in January 2025 but could leave after just half a season. The 25-year-old featured in 26 league matches during the previous campaign, establishing himself as a regular starter despite the team’s struggles. Reims ultimately suffered relegation from the top flight at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Reims rebuilding after drop

Reims are undergoing a squad overhaul after their demotion and will not obstruct Gbane’s exit if they receive a substantial offer. The club has already seen several key departures this summer, including goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen’s transfer to Newcastle United and midfielder Patrick Zabi’s move to Paris FC.

Gbane appears set to follow them through the exit door, with reports indicating that the Ligue 2 side will not stand in the way of a transfer provided the financial terms are satisfactory.

Multiple clubs monitoring situation

Besides West Ham and Scottish champions Celtic, Turkish outfit Trabzonspor have also registered concrete interest in the holding midfielder. Gbane, who has earned two senior caps for Ivory Coast, offers defensive stability and experience in the French football pyramid.

The potential for a bargain move appeals to clubs across Europe, with Reims no longer able to command premium prices following their relegation. West Ham and Celtic both view the midfielder as a viable option to strengthen their respective squads ahead of the new season.

Transfer timeline

No formal bids have been confirmed at this stage, though the situation could develop rapidly as interested parties assess their options. Gbane’s availability represents an opportunity to acquire an established second-tier player without the inflated fees typically associated with top-flight transfers.

The coming weeks will determine whether the Ivorian opts for the Premier League, the Scottish Premiership, or a move to Turkey’s Süper Lig.
