Arsenal have completed the signing of Spain full-back Ona Batlle on a free transfer following her departure from Barcelona. The 27-year-old becomes the fourth player to join Renée Slegers’ side this window, continuing the club’s determined push to complete early business.
Proven winner joins Gunners
Batlle arrives with substantial silverware from her three-year spell at Barcelona, where she made 114 appearances and scored 14 goals. During her second stint at the Catalan club—having started her career in their academy—she collected three league titles, three Spanish Cups, three Spanish Super Cups and two Champions League winners’ medals.
On the international stage, Batlle was part of the Spain squad that won the 2023 World Cup. She also started in the European Championship final against England earlier this summer.
The defender previously spent time in English football with Manchester United, where she played 77 matches before returning to Spain. She offers versatility across the back line, comfortable at both right-back and left-back.
Barcelona exodus continues
Batlle’s exit forms part of a significant summer reshuffle at Barcelona. She is one of four members of the Spain national team to leave the Champions League winners on free transfers this summer. Alexia Putellas has already joined London City Lionesses, while Mapi León is also expected to move to the same club. Salma Paralluelo’s next destination remains unknown.
Barcelona announced at the end of May that Batlle would depart upon the expiry of her contract.
What was said
Speaking to Arsenal’s media channels, Batlle said: “I’m very happy and excited to get going. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can’t wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our supporters. I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”
Arsenal head coach Renée Slegers added: “She’s a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She’s a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”
Batlle follows Germany midfielder Georgia Stanway, Swiss forward Selina Cerci and Austrian international Geraldine Reuteler through the door at the Emirates, all arriving on free transfers from Bundesliga clubs.
