Villa Hijack Magpies’ Midfield Move

Aston Villa are poised to beat Newcastle United to the signature of SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi after agreeing a deal worth almost €70 million including add-ons. The 20-year-old Swiss international has reportedly agreed a long-term contract with the Birmingham club and is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days.

The development marks a dramatic twist in the transfer saga. Newcastle had previously reached an agreement with the Bundesliga side for around €60 million and were understood to be optimistic about securing the player’s approval. However, Villa renewed their interest and have now successfully hijacked the move, according to Sky Germany, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano and journalist Ben Jacobs.

World Cup Star Attracts Premier League Interest

Manzambi established himself as one of Europe’s most promising midfielders during a breakout year. He joined Freiburg from Swiss side Servette in January 2023 and quickly became a key figure, earning a call-up to Switzerland‘s World Cup squad where he scored three goals and provided two assists in four appearances.

A knee injury unfortunately ruled him out of Switzerland’s final two tournament matches, but his performances had already alerted several Premier League clubs. The midfielder remains under contract with Freiburg until 2030.

Playing Style and Attributes

Scouting expert Florian Först describes Manzambi as a “box-to-box player with a high work rate and strong physical presence.” The 20-year-old excels in close ball control and agility, frequently breaking through tackles with powerful runs.

His defensive contribution is equally notable, having won more than 290 duels last season. While his progressive passing remains an area for development, his intelligent positioning and finishing ability—demonstrated at the World Cup—make him a constant threat from distance.

The transfer, if completed following the medical, would represent a significant late victory for Aston Villa in the summer window and bring a frustrating end to Newcastle’s pursuit of the Swiss prodigy.
