Real Sociedad have emerged as frontrunners to sign Malang Sarr after the defender left RC Lens as a free agent, according to Foot Mercato. The Basque club are actively pursuing the 27-year-old centre-back, who departed the French side at the end of June despite their qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Sarr established himself as a defensive cornerstone during his two-year spell with Lens. In his final season, the former France youth international played a pivotal role in the club’s historic campaign, helping them secure second place in Ligue 1 and capture the Coupe de France—the club’s first triumph in that competition. His performances proved instrumental in securing the silverware that capped the club’s most successful season in decades.

However, with his contract expiring, Sarr opted against extending his stay at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, choosing instead to explore opportunities elsewhere. His availability without a transfer fee has drawn significant interest from clubs across Europe.

Real Sociedad are now attempting to bring the versatile defender to La Liga. The Spanish side view the former Chelsea player as a valuable addition to their squad, particularly given his recent experience competing at the highest domestic level.

Yet they face competition from within France. Olympique de Marseille have also made enquiries about Sarr, with the Mediterranean club monitoring the situation closely. The interest from two established clubs suggests the defender will have multiple options as he weighs his next career move.

Sarr’s departure from Chelsea in 2023 marked a fresh start that ultimately proved fruitful. Now, with his stock risen following Lens’s trophy-winning season, he finds himself in a strong negotiating position as he considers offers from Real Sociedad and Marseille. The coming weeks will likely determine whether he opts for a return to France or embraces a new challenge in Spain’s top flight.
