Aston Villa are close to completing the signing of Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal reportedly worth £49 million, stepping in to hijack Newcastle United‘s pursuit of the 20-year-old.
The Midlands club moved swiftly following Switzerland’s World Cup exit on Sunday, capitalising on delays in Newcastle’s negotiations. Magpies executives had flown to Germany last week and secured verbal assurances regarding personal terms, but Manzambi preferred to delay formalities until after the tournament, where he was managing a minor knee injury.
Villa’s decisive advantage
Villa’s victory over Freiburg in May’s Europa League final meant the Birmingham club were already familiar to Manzambi. Reports indicate the versatile midfielder harboured reservations about relocating to Tyneside, and the Europa League champions’ intervention proved decisive.
The 20-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Bundesliga, amassing 47 appearances across all competitions and contributing seven goals and nine assists. His performances have attracted significant interest ahead of Villa’s return to the Champions League.
Newcastle’s difficult summer
The collapse of the Manzambi deal compounds a challenging transfer window for manager Eddie Howe. Newcastle have already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, while captain Bruno Guimarães has informed the hierarchy he wishes to leave, preferably for Arsenal. Liverpool also beat the Magpies to the signing of Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna.
St James’ Park officials are implementing a new recruitment strategy focused on players aged 24 and under, ideally costing less than £40 million. The club has already invested approximately £80 million in three under-21 talents: goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims, winger Bazoumana Touré from Hoffenheim, and midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax.
Howe is anxious to balance this youthful influx with experienced campaigners. He remains determined to retain Guimarães, though this depends on Arsenal tabling a formal offer that meets Newcastle’s valuation and how forcefully the Brazil international pushes for a move. The club may also attempt to sign Archie Gray, the 20-year-old former Leeds academy graduate now at Tottenham.
Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season and face a crucial period as they seek to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.
