Marco Palestra’s agent Alessandro Lucci has strongly rejected criticism from Inter President Beppe Marotta regarding the Italy international’s move to Chelsea. Marotta accused the defender of reneging on a verbal agreement with the Nerazzurri, but Lucci insists the transfer collapsed because Inter and Atalanta could not finalise terms despite six weeks of daily contact.

War of words

Marotta launched a scathing attack during a press conference, claiming Palestra “backed out of a verbal agreement.” He also criticised Lucci’s role in the affair, suggesting the agent could have guided the player toward a different decision.

Lucci responded via a statement to news agency ANSA, expressing shock at the remarks from a president he has worked alongside for over 25 years. He acknowledged that Inter directors maintained “constant and constructive talks” with his camp, yet emphasised that this dialogue never produced a resolution between the two clubs.

According to the agent, negotiations remained deadlocked for 45 days. He stated that the clubs “were never able to reach a definitive agreement,” which created an opening for Chelsea to intervene. Lucci noted that contact with the London club began only two weeks prior, but they managed to “seal a deal” rapidly with Atalanta and the player.

Financial superiority

Chelsea’s proposal proved impossible for Inter to match. Sources indicate the Premier League club offered Atalanta approximately €10 million more than Inter’s bid, which was believed to be €40 million plus €5 million in add-ons. Additionally, Chelsea tabled a salary package double the amount Inter had offered Palestra.

The Italy international had initially indicated his willingness to wait for a move to San Siro, but the prolonged impasse opened the door for Chelsea to present what Lucci described as an equally compelling project.

Pattern of failed deals

The breakdown continues a difficult trend in negotiations between Inter and Atalanta. The clubs have previously struggled to reach agreements for Nigeria winger Ademola Lookman and Brazilian midfielder Éderson, despite extended talks for both players earlier in the window.

Lucci concluded his statement by urging all parties to turn the page without further attacks. He insisted that Palestra deserves respect and called for calm as the player begins his new chapter in England.
