Manchester United have abandoned their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Éderson after medical examinations revealed knee problems, though the Premier League side could return for the Brazil international later in the transfer window. The agreement, valued at €45 million including add-ons, collapsed following intensive checks conducted in both the United States and Manchester.

The 27-year-old underwent initial medical assessments in the US before flying to the UK for further evaluation by United doctors. Atalanta sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli confirmed the development, stating: “We were stunned.” He added that the player is “happy to remain” at the Serie A club.

United accelerate alternative targets

With the Éderson move stalled, United are pressing ahead with other options to strengthen their midfield. The club are in advanced negotiations to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and have already agreed a £50 million deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos.

Manager Michael Carrick is seeking to recruit at least two new midfielders as he rebuilds his squad following a disappointing campaign. The failure to complete Éderson’s signing represents a setback to these plans, though sources suggest the door remains open to resurrecting the deal before the window closes.

Atalanta move to secure Brazilian’s future

Atalanta are now attempting to tie Éderson to a new contract as they seek to protect his value. The midfielder enters the final year of his current deal, which expires in 2027, and fresh terms would strengthen the Italian club’s position should United or other suitors return later this summer.

Giuntoli confirmed that negotiations for an extension are underway, emphasising that the player wishes to stay in Bergamo despite the collapsed transfer.

Player background

Éderson joined Atalanta from Salernitana in 2022 for €22.9 million, having spent just six months with the latter following his departure from Brazilian side Corinthians. The defensive midfielder has made 180 competitive appearances for La Dea, contributing to their Europa League triumph and two Coppa Italia final appearances.

Whether United ultimately revive their interest depends on progress with Tielemans and other targets, alongside developments regarding Éderson’s contractual situation at Atalanta.
