Manchester United could return to their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Éderson later this summer despite suspending their current efforts to sign the Brazilian due to medical concerns.
A deal for the Brazil international appears to be “off” for the time being following fitness checks, though the Premier League club may revisit the situation before the transfer window closes. The development comes as United press ahead with alternative targets to strengthen their midfield under manager Michael Carrick.
Tielemans and Santos deals progress
United are currently in advanced negotiations to secure Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The Belgium international has emerged as a leading target as Carrick seeks to overhaul his engine room.
The club have also agreed a £50m deal with Chelsea to sign Andrey Santos. These acquisitions form part of a broader strategy to bring in “at least two, if not three” new midfielders this summer as United rebuild their squad.
Medical concerns halt Ederson transfer
The Éderson deal stalled after the player underwent medical examinations. The 25-year-old initially had checks in the United States before flying to the United Kingdom for further assessment with United medical staff.
Concerns regarding the midfielder’s fitness and medical status emerged following these tests, prompting the current impasse. Reports suggest the initial agreement has been shelved indefinitely, though not permanently.
Atalanta push for contract extension
Meanwhile, Atalanta are attempting to strengthen their negotiating position by offering Éderson a new contract. The midfielder is currently in the final year of his existing deal, which expires in the summer of 2027.
The Serie A club believe securing fresh terms would improve their stance should the player seek a move away at a later date. Atalanta maintain that the player is injury-free despite the concerns raised during United’s medical process.
Whether United ultimately return for Éderson depends on developments with Tielemans and other targets, alongside the Brazilian’s contractual situation. With the transfer window remaining open, the midfielder remains a possible option should earlier obstacles be overcome.
