Rayan Cherki has delivered a brutally honest assessment of France’s 2026 FIFA World Cup exit, insisting the tournament favourites only had themselves to blame after falling to a 2-0 semi-final defeat against Spain in Dallas. The Manchester City forward rejected external excuses following the elimination, directly contradicting manager Didier Deschamps’ complaints about the match officials.

Les Bleus had entered the latter stages as the team to beat following a dominant campaign throughout the summer. However, they produced a flat display at the critical moment, with La Roja successfully stifling the free-flowing attack that had characterised France’s progress. The result ended hopes of a final appearance on Sunday.

Speaking in the post-match mixed zone, the 22-year-old dismissed the refereeing as a factor. Cherki stated France “lost against ourselves” rather than falling to Spain or the match officials. He noted that Les Bleus “scared everyone” during the tournament and insisted that “the only team capable of knocking us out was ourselves.”

Deschamps bemoans officiating

Whilst Cherki shouldered responsibility, Deschamps adopted a different approach in his post-match remarks. The France manager publicly complained about the quality of refereeing during the semi-final, offering a starkly different perspective on the defeat.

Bronze medal match awaits

France must now regroup for Saturday’s third-place play-off, where they will face either Argentina or England. The fixture represents a final opportunity to salvage silverware from their campaign, though Cherki’s candid admission underlines the squad’s frustration at failing to reach the showpiece final.
