Liverpool are reportedly willing to pay €60 million to secure Mainz midfielder Kaishu Sano, a fee that would shatter the Bundesliga club’s record for a player sale.
German publication Sport Bild claims the Japan international is expected to depart Mainz during the current transfer window. The magazine suggests Liverpool have identified the defensive midfielder as a priority target and are prepared to meet a valuation significantly higher than the player’s current market price.
Record-Breaking Potential
The proposed €60 million outlay would exceed Mainz’s previous record departure by a considerable margin. Brajan Gruda currently holds that distinction following his €31.5 million transfer to Brighton and Hove Albion in 2024.
According to Sport Bild, Sano’s market value was estimated at €40 million by Transfermarkt in May. This figure has reportedly risen further following his impressive performances for Japan at the World Cup.
From Kashima to Anfield?
Sano joined Mainz from Kashima Antlers in 2024 for a modest €2.5 million. He has since established himself as a key figure in the middle of the park, making the potential windfall extraordinary business for the German side.
Japanese outlet Nikkan Sports initially linked Liverpool with the midfielder last month. The fresh reports from Germany suggest interest has intensified, though no agreement has been confirmed and no deal is yet complete.
While multiple sources indicate Sano will leave Mainz this summer, negotiations would need to advance significantly before any medical examination or contract signing takes place. Mainz supporters will monitor developments closely as the window progresses, aware that losing such an influential figure would leave a significant void in their engine room.
