ITV and BBC will broadcast the complete FIFA World Cup final half-time show on Sunday, with both British rights holders planning for an extended interval lasting between 25 and 30 minutes. The lengthy break, which accounts for time required to install and remove a stage from the pitch at the New York New Jersey Stadium, significantly exceeds the 15-minute limit set out in the laws of the game.

The broadcasters initially raised concerns that the spectacle would limit their ability to analyse the first half. However, they have confirmed they will screen the full performance because the setup and dismantling process will provide adequate time for match commentary alongside the entertainment.

Global music stars

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has curated the 11-minute show, which will feature pop icons Madonna and Shakira alongside K-pop group BTS. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has described the event as a groundbreaking spectacle that will celebrate football, music and our shared values, ensuring a legacy that transcends the final whistle.

Regulatory implications

The planned duration creates a potential conflict with International Football Association Board (IFAB) regulations, which state that half-time should not exceed 15 minutes and may only be altered with the referee’s permission. FIFA held a 24-minute half-time interval at last year’s Club World Cup final at the same venue, though that performance took place in the stands rather than requiring on-pitch staging.

The world governing body is not believed to have received any formal objection from IFAB regarding the extended break for Sunday’s final.

Expanded entertainment schedule

FIFA has substantially increased musical programming throughout this tournament to cater to the American market. A closing ceremony featuring Robbie Williams and Jennifer Hudson will take place 90 minutes before kick-off.

Earlier matches in each host nation featured extensive pre-match ceremonies, with performers including Burna Boy, Alanis Morissette and Katy Perry appearing at venues across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
