Leeds United have completed the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo for a reported fee of €40 million. The 23-year-old centre-back underwent medical tests this week before the Yorkshire club formally announced the transfer, marking their first major acquisition since securing promotion to the Premier League.
The deal represents a record investment for Leeds. Italian champions Juventus will receive approximately half of the transfer fee due to a 50 per cent sell-on clause negotiated when Sassuolo signed Muharemovic permanently in 2025 for €2 million.
Juventus windfall
The Turin club initially loaned the defender to Sassuolo before agreeing to a permanent transfer last year. That arrangement ensured Juventus would retain a significant stake in any future sale, meaning they now collect around €20 million from Leeds’ outlay—a substantial return on their original investment.
International pedigree
Muharemovic arrives with recent World Cup experience, having represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 finals held across the USA, Mexico and Canada. The national team secured their place in the tournament by defeating Italy in the qualifying play-offs, with the defender featuring in the competition.
At club level, he departs Italy with 32 Serie A appearances to his name, scoring twice and providing two assists during his spell with Sassuolo. Despite his age, he established himself as a regular starter in one of Europe’s major leagues.
Fending off competition
Leeds faced stiff competition for the defender’s signature. Inter, Bournemouth, Sunderland and even a potential return to Juventus had all been linked with the player earlier in the transfer window. However, Leeds stepped up to meet Sassuolo’s valuation, securing a key target as they prepare for their return to English football’s top tier.
The club welcomed Muharemovic on social media with a message in his native language: “Dobro došao u Leeds, Tarik!”
