SC Freiburg have announced the signing of midfielder Yannik Engelhardt from Como 1907, securing the 25-year-old on a long-term contract ahead of the new Bundesliga season. The midfielder returns to the top flight following a campaign on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach, with the deal believed to be worth approximately €7 million.

The Breisgauers moved decisively to beat competition from Club Brugge, who had also targeted the defensive midfielder. The capture represents a significant statement of intent from Freiburg as they strengthen their squad for domestic and European commitments.

Hartenbach praises returning midfielder

Sporting director Klemens Hartenbach said Engelhardt “made a very strong impression” during his first stint at the club. The director praised the midfielder’s ability to “read the game” and described him as “technically very good.”

Hartenbach highlighted that while Engelhardt’s “structural qualities were particularly valued” at previous employers, Freiburg aim to combine these defensive attributes with his offensive capabilities. This tactical versatility could prove crucial as the club navigates domestic and European commitments.

Permanent Bundesliga return

Engelhardt originally joined Como 1907 last summer but spent the entire 2024-25 season on loan at Gladbach, gaining valuable experience without securing a permanent move. The switch to Freiburg offers the midfielder stability and a clear pathway for development.

The reported €7 million fee underlines Freiburg’s determination to invest in proven positional players despite operating with more modest resources than many continental rivals. At 25, Engelhardt enters his prime years with immediate opportunities to establish himself in the starting eleven.

The transfer concludes a lengthy pursuit for Freiburg, who identified Engelhardt as a priority target to bolster their midfield options. The length of his contract remains undisclosed, though the club confirmed it extends over multiple years.
