Mainz 05 have completed the signing of veteran goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow from Heart of Midlothian. The 34-year-old returns to the Bundesliga following a season in Scotland, where he served as first choice during Hearts’ agonising near-miss in the Premiership title race, finishing second to Celtic on the final day.

The German club confirmed the transfer this week, with sporting director Niko Bungert hailing the capture as ideal for their requirements. Schwolow brings extensive top-flight experience, having made more than 200 Bundesliga appearances for Freiburg, Hertha BSC, Schalke and Union Berlin.

Uniquely, Mainz have agreed to allow the former Germany Under-20 international to remain with the Edinburgh side for two Champions League qualifying matches until 30 July. This arrangement ensures Schwolow can complete his continental commitments with Hearts before fully integrating into the Mainz squad.

Competition for the starting role

Schwolow arrives to fill the vacancy left by Daniel Batz, who joined Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer earlier this summer. He will immediately challenge long-time first-choice keeper Robin Zentner for the starting position at the Bundesliga club.

Bungert emphasised the keeper’s local roots and readiness. “With Alexander Schwolow, we got exactly the goalkeeping profile we were looking for,” he said. “He is a fitting character and team player and has just played an outstanding season with Heart of Midlothian. Alex knows the Bundesliga inside and out through his more than 200 Bundesliga games and will not need a settling-in time because he grew up just a few kilometers away from Mainz.”

Player reaction

The Wiesbaden-born shot-stopper expressed enthusiasm for the club’s ethos. “Mainz 05 stands for cohesion, passion, and a very clear way of playing football,” Schwolow stated. “This mentality is a good fit for me. After my exciting time in Scotland, I wanted to take on a new challenge in the Bundesliga and at Mainz I had the feeling that it fits very well humanly and athletically.”

Once his Champions League qualifiers conclude at the end of July, Schwolow will join his new teammates ahead of the forthcoming Bundesliga campaign.
