Al-Sadd have abandoned their attempt to sign Nayef Aguerd from Olympique de Marseille after proving unable to meet the defender’s €15 million release clause. The Qatari club entered negotiations for the Morocco international but withdrew when the financial demands became insurmountable.

Creative Exchange Rejected

According to reports, Al-Sadd explored alternative structures to complete the deal after baulking at the €15m fee. The club proposed including former AS Monaco midfielder Mohamed Camara as part of the exchange in an effort to lower the cash component. However, this arrangement failed to satisfy Marseille, and negotiations subsequently collapsed.

Aguerd, who endured an injury-disrupted campaign at the Vélodrome last season, remains contracted to the Ligue 1 side. The 30-year-old centre-back struggled for consistent fitness during the previous term but retains value as an experienced international defender.

UEFA Pressure Forces Sales

The failed transfer comes as Marseille face regulatory pressure to balance their books. UEFA have mandated that the club must sell players this summer to avoid a ban from European competition the following season. Whilst Marseille retained their continental status for the upcoming campaign, failure to generate sales revenue would trigger severe sanctions next year.

This financial imperative makes Aguerd’s departure a practical solution for the French club. His release clause offers a straightforward transaction mechanism for any interested party, eliminating the need for prolonged negotiations during a compressed window.

Uncertain Future

With Al-Sadd now out of the running, Aguerd remains at Marseille for the immediate future. However, the club’s ongoing need to satisfy UEFA requirements suggests the defender could still depart before the transfer deadline. Any prospective buyer must activate the €15m clause to secure his signature.

The collapse of this deal highlights the rigid financial constraints facing Marseille as they attempt to navigate compliance whilst maintaining squad competitiveness for the season ahead.
