Anan Khalaili’s proposed €30 million transfer to Inter Milan has collapsed after the Arab-Israeli winger failed mandatory medical examinations required by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI). The 21-year-old had travelled to Italy last week to complete his move from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, but irregularities discovered during cardiac stress testing have blocked the deal.

Every athlete seeking to compete in Italian football must obtain a CONI health certificate, which involves stringent cardiovascular checks that exceed the requirements of many other European leagues. Sources indicate that abnormalities detected during these tests mean Khalaili cannot currently meet the criteria to work in Italian football under existing legislation.

Strict protocols block move

Italy maintains some of Europe’s most rigorous medical standards for professional footballers. The regulations specifically prohibit players with certain cardiac conditions from competing, even if they have been cleared to play in other major leagues.

This strict approach has previously forced high-profile departures from Serie A. Former Inter midfielder Christian Eriksen left Italian football following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, while Fiorentina’s Edoardo Bove also saw his career in the league curtailed by similar health protocols. Both players were able to continue their careers in leagues that permit implanted defibrillators, devices banned under Italian sporting law.

Return to Belgium and uncertain future

Following the failed medical, Khalaili will return to Union Saint-Gilloise for further examinations to determine whether treatment is required. The Belgian club will assess whether the detected irregularities affect his availability for domestic competition, where medical standards differ from those enforced in Italy.

The winger broke his silence on social media by sharing a verse from the Quran on Instagram Stories. “Perhaps you dislike something which is good for you and like something which is bad for you,” read the post, which showed him in prayer. The full verse continues: “Allah knows and you do not know,” suggesting the player is seeking spiritual perspective on the career setback.

Inter Milan will now need to reassess their recruitment strategy for the position, while Khalaili faces a period of medical uncertainty that could influence his prospects of securing a transfer to other major European leagues.
