Olympique de Marseille midfielder Angel Gomes has issued an apology to manager Bruno Genesio, acknowledging his recent performances have not met expectations. The former Manchester United academy product, who joined Marseille in 2025, has pledged to dedicate himself to returning to his top form for the club.

Gomes has endured a challenging start to the current season, with his displays drawing criticism from sections of the Marseille fanbase. Despite finding the net in a significant match against rivals Paris Saint-Germain, his overall impact in the opening weeks has been inconsistent, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among supporters.

A Difficult Start at Marseille

The 26-year-old England international arrived at the Vélodrome in the summer of 2025, joining from Lille OSC after his contract expired. Expectations were considerable for the midfielder, but his initial period at the club proved difficult. This led to a loan spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Following Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League, Gomes returned to Marseille. The club’s financial context and limitations in the transfer market meant that recruiting new players was challenging, effectively affording Gomes a second opportunity to establish himself in the squad. However, his struggles have continued into the current campaign.

His direct apology to manager Bruno Genesio underscores his recognition of the need for significant improvement. Gomes’s commitment to doing “everything to return to top form” will be crucial as he looks to win over the fans and contribute more consistently to Marseille’s ambitions this season.
