João Palhinha has reported for pre-season duty at Bayern Munich as the German champions intensify efforts to sell the Portugal international. Aston Villa have emerged as the latest club monitoring the 31-year-old, though transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano indicates no direct discussions have taken place between the Premier League side and Bayern.
Unai Emery and Villa’s hierarchy are currently deliberating over whether to submit a formal offer for the defensive midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur. Romano reports that while Villa are interested, they have not yet contacted Bayern. Conflicting accounts suggest differing structures for any potential deal. The Athletic indicates Villa are weighing a temporary loan arrangement, while Teamtalk suggests negotiations centre on a permanent transfer worth approximately €23.5 million. This falls short of Bayern’s €30 million valuation.
Bayern’s stance and alternatives
Sporting director Max Eberl is eager to offload Palhinha, who finds himself without a role under head coach Vincent Kompany. Sky Germany notes that no agreement has been reached with any club, leaving Palhinha in limbo despite his return to the club’s Säbener Straße training base.
Bayern’s preference remains a permanent sale. Tottenham recently abandoned their pursuit after refusing to meet the €30 million asking price, while Portuguese giants Benfica and Sporting Lisbon are interested only in loan deals that the Bavarian club wish to avoid. Palhinha has also rejected a lucrative approach from Saudi Arabia. A return to Benfica is not believed to be close.

Palhinha has remained non-committal when questioned about his future. “I am a Bayern player at the moment,” he told reporters. When asked specifically about Benfica, he responded: “We’ll see. I’m not going to talk. I will return to Portugal at some point, but I don’t know if it’s going to be now.”
