Atletico Madrid are assessing two midfield options previously linked with Milan as they look to bolster their squad this summer. The Spanish club have been offered Germany international Leon Goretzka on a free transfer following his departure from Bayern Munich, whilst also retaining interest in Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand.

Goretzka available on free transfer

Goretzka is expected to leave Bayern Munich as a free agent after announcing his departure from the Bundesliga club several months ago. According to reports in Spain, the 29-year-old has now been presented to Atletico Madrid as an option to reinforce their midfield.

The former Schalke player had appeared close to a move to Italy earlier this year. In April, reports suggested Goretzka had given approval to join Milan this summer. However, developments have stalled in recent weeks, partly due to the sacking of Massimiliano Allegri. The Italian coach, who left the club at the end of the season, was understood to be a long-time admirer of the German midfielder.

Hjulmand connection complicates Milan pursuit

Atletico Madrid are simultaneously monitoring Hjulmand, the Denmark international who currently captains Sporting CP. The 25-year-old previously played for Lecce in Serie A before moving to Portugal.

Hjulmand has also featured on Milan’s transfer shortlist, with a significant connection strengthening that link. The midfielder played under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP, and Amorim has since taken over as Milan head coach. This existing relationship had fuelled speculation that the Rossoneri might make a concerted effort to bring Hjulmand to San Siro.

However, Milan’s immediate focus lies elsewhere. The club’s priority for the coming weeks is to secure a new central defender rather than pursuing midfield reinforcements. This shift in emphasis could open the door for Atletico Madrid to move decisively for Hjulmand without direct competition from the Italian giants in the short term.

Competition and next steps

The situation creates a complex dynamic where Atletico Madrid find themselves competing with Milan’s previous interests, even as the Serie A club temporarily steps back from midfield recruitment. With Goretzka available without a transfer fee and Hjulmand commanding a significant fee from his Portuguese club, Atletico’s sporting director will need to weigh financial considerations against tactical requirements.

Neither deal is believed to be imminent, with Atletico currently in the assessment phase for both players. The coming weeks will likely determine whether the Madrid club opt for the experience of Goretzka on a free transfer, the long-term potential of Hjulmand, or potentially pursue both options to significantly refresh their midfield ahead of the new season.
