Slovakian international midfielder László Bénes has completed a permanent transfer from 1.FC Union Berlin to Belgian Pro League side KAA Gent. The move, confirmed by Union’s director of football Horst Heldt, secures the 28-year-old’s departure from the German capital ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Bénes arrived at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei during the summer 2024 transfer window but departs after just one season. The experienced midfielder accumulated 25 competitive appearances for the Bundesliga side, scoring twice and providing one assist across all competitions during his brief tenure in Köpenick.

Goalscoring Form in Turkey

Seeking regular first-team opportunities, Bénes moved on loan to Turkish Süper Lig outfit Kayserispor during the latter stages of the campaign. The temporary switch proved significantly more productive than his time in Berlin, with the 28-year-old finding the net seven times and contributing two assists whilst in Anatolia.

This marked improvement in attacking output appears to have facilitated the permanent exit. Belgian football now offers the Slovakia international a fresh platform to build upon the form he displayed during his loan spell, having struggled to secure a regular starting role in the Bundesliga.

Official Confirmation

Heldt acknowledged the player’s professionalism and commitment during his twelve months with the club. “László always showed professionalism with us and made some important contributions with his qualities. After his loan, an opportunity has arisen for him to reorient himself long-term. We thank him for his commitment in the Union jersey. We wish him all the best and much success in Gent on his future path,” he said.

The transfer concludes Bénes’s association with Union Berlin after a single campaign. Rather than returning to pre-season preparations in Germany, the midfielder will now integrate with his new teammates in Belgium as KAA Gent ready themselves for the upcoming Pro League season.
