FC Augsburg sporting director Benjamin Weber has hailed 19-year-old defender Noahkai Banks as a future elite centre-back, insisting the teenager possesses the necessary attributes to reach the pinnacle of the position. The powerful stopper emerged as one of the Bundesliga club’s most promising talents during the 2025/26 campaign, earning regular starting berths for much of the season despite a dip in playing time during the closing months.

Weber, who oversees recruitment and development at the WWK Arena, expressed firm belief in Banks’s long-term potential. The Augsburg director stated that the youngster combines physical strength with technical quality, giving him the tools to become “one of the best centre-backs” in the game. Banks is tied to the Bavarian club until 2029, providing a stable platform for his continued growth.

International tug-of-war

Banks faces a significant decision regarding his international allegiance. Born in Hawaii but raised primarily in Germany, the defender holds dual citizenship and remains eligible for both the United States and Germany. He has already collected 12 caps across various United States youth age groups and received his first senior call-up in September 2025, though he did not feature in the match.

The teenager has admitted to feeling “very torn” between the two nations, a situation that intensified speculation about his World Cup prospects with the US programme. When asked whether the uncertainty affected Banks’s form during the latter stages of the 2025/26 season, Weber declined to comment on personal matters but offered a broader observation on the evolving nature of international football.

Weber noted that dual nationality has become increasingly common in the modern game, likening national teams to clubs where players often hold multiple passports. He suggested that the emotional connection to a single national anthem has diminished for some players, with agents now treating international selection as a strategic career decision rather than purely a matter of patriotic duty.

Regardless of which country Banks ultimately represents, Augsburg appear committed to nurturing his development over the coming years. With four years remaining on his current deal, the club will hope to guide the centre-back through the next crucial phases of his career as he seeks to fulfil the potential identified by Weber.
