Benjamin Weber is currently in the United States on an inspirational networking trip organised by the German Football League (DFL). While the World Cup co-host nation provides the backdrop for football’s biggest tournament, the FC Augsburg sporting director insists he is not there to hunt for new signings.

Learning From the Tournament

Weber explained that the club deliberately avoids using major tournaments as primary scouting grounds. He noted that the market becomes overcrowded when the global spotlight shines on players, with numerous clubs queuing to sign those who perform well on the world stage. Instead, he prefers to observe the mentality and tactical approaches of different nations, gathering insights to bring back to Bavaria.

Transfer Market Delays

The tournament creates practical challenges for mid-sized Bundesliga clubs. Weber acknowledged that big international competitions typically delay transfer activity across the market. Augsburg expects the window to extend longer than usual this summer, with meaningful movement only picking up once larger clubs complete their business and create opportunities further down the hierarchy.

“When you have a big tournament, there is always a bit of a delay,” Weber explained. “We are prepared, but we know that the market will start after the World Cup when the bigger clubs start to do their transfers.”

Character Over Talent

The 43-year-old outlined a recruitment philosophy that places personality above pure ability. He stated that at the level Augsburg scout, technical quality is assumed, but strong character determines whether a player fits their dressing room. The club seeks individuals who strengthen group bonds rather than stand alone as talents.

“Character is always more important than talent for us,” Weber said. “That’s how we want to scout and build a group. We want strong characters on and off the pitch.”

Tuchel Influence

Weber draws on extensive experience gained during 13 years as a video analyst under current England manager Thomas Tuchel. He worked alongside the coach at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. These spells at elite clubs shaped his belief that successful teams require leaders throughout the squad, not just in the coaching staff.

Despite modern data analytics, Weber emphasises human qualities in recruitment. He believes understanding how players interact and support one another proves more valuable than statistics alone. This approach, developed through years in top-flight dressing rooms, now guides Augsburg’s strategy as they prepare to navigate the post-World Cup transfer period.
