Aurélien Tchouaméni has ended speculation over his future by signing a contract extension that binds him to Real Madrid until 2031. The agreement, confirmed by journalist Matteo Moretto and corroborated by Marca, extends his stay by three years beyond the previous expiry date of 2028.
Mourinho’s influence
The 26-year-old’s decision to commit long-term has been heavily influenced by the arrival of José Mourinho as head coach. According to Marca, the Portuguese’s approval was sought for all squad-building decisions heading into next season, and the midfielder’s retention carries his explicit backing. Mourinho typically favours tactically versatile players, and Tchouaméni’s capacity to operate at centre-back when required makes him a valuable asset in the new manager’s plans.
The French international arrived from Monaco in the summer of 2022 and has since started under Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Raúl Arbeloa. His ability to shield the defence while offering positional flexibility has established him as a fixture in the engine room.
Midfield reshuffle continues
While Tchouaméni’s future is now settled, Real Madrid are open to selling his compatriot Eduardo Camavinga. The club have set a €60 million asking price for the midfielder as they look to restructure the department around a settled core. Earlier speculation had suggested Tchouaméni might be used as leverage in deals for other targets, including Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, but those possibilities are now firmly closed.
International return
The extension was announced on the same evening Tchouaméni returned to France’s training group at Bentley. He had missed the round-of-16 victory over Paraguay due to a muscular complaint but rejoined his teammates as Didier Deschamps’ side prepare for a quarter-final meeting with Morocco. The national team manager monitored the session closely and has not ruled the player out of the upcoming fixture.
With his contractual status resolved through the remainder of the decade, Tchouaméni is positioned as the anchoring figure in Madrid’s midfield rebuild. The club will now turn their attention to offloading surplus assets to fund further recruitment under Mourinho.
