Barcelona is reportedly seeking to capitalise on internal divisions at Atlético Madrid to secure the transfer of Argentina international Julián Álvarez, even as the Madrid club maintains a firm public stance that the forward is unavailable.

Although Atlético Madrid officially insists the 26-year-old is not on the market, Barcelona believes certain figures within the Spanish club’s hierarchy are open to negotiating a sale. This perceived split between public denial and private willingness forms the core of the Catalan club’s strategy, which relies on sustained pressure to force a change in position.

Player desire versus institutional resistance

Álvarez has openly expressed his wish to leave the Metropolitano, adding internal pressure on a board that has thus far refused to consider offers. Atlético Madrid’s chief executive, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, has escalated the dispute by threatening to report Barcelona to FIFA over what the club considers an irregular approach to the player.

President Enrique Cerezo has also repeatedly dismissed any possibility of a deal, making any eventual U-turn politically costly for the club’s leadership. Álvarez signed a contract until 2030 featuring a release clause of approximately €500 million, giving Atlético strong legal grounds to retain him regardless of his personal wishes.

Financial gap and swap complications

Barcelona has explored proposals valued between €100 million and €150 million, a figure far below the contractual exit clause but one that might tempt Atlético if internal voices favouring a sale gain influence. The alternative of a player exchange has emerged, though obstacles remain.

Atlético has shown interest in Barcelona winger Ferran Torres and midfielder Marc Casadó as potential makeweights. However, Torres is reportedly unwilling to move to the Metropolitano, while Casadó is considered more amenable personally though doubts persist about whether his profile suits manager Diego Simeone’s tactical system. Without agreement on included players, the negotiation hinges on a straight cash fee that Atlético currently refuses to discuss.

Strategy and timeline

Barcelona’s approach appears designed to erode Atlético’s resolve over time. By maintaining public interest and keeping Álvarez’s name in circulation, the Catalan club hopes to make the cost of retaining a discontented player outweigh the financial gain of a sale above €130 million.

The risk for Barcelona lies in the uncertain timeline. While the player’s desire to leave strengthens their hand, Gil Marín’s threat of FIFA intervention and the unified public front from Atlético’s senior figures suggest any breakthrough would require a significant shift in the Madrid club’s internal calculations. For now, the impasse continues with Barcelona waiting and Atlético publicly holding firm.
