Lens Secure Promising Defender from Rivals

Hugo Bayomog has agreed to join RC Lens from Lille OSC on a two-year professional trainee contract, crossing one of French football’s most heated divides. The 17-year-old right-back will leave his boyhood club when his current youth deal expires, opting for the northern rivals over extended terms at Lille.

The move represents a notable coup for Lens. According to reports, Lille were slow to act on Bayomog’s contract situation, allowing several suitors—including clubs from Ligue 1, Ligue 2 and Belgian side RSC Anderlecht—to approach the teenager. Lens ultimately prevailed in the chase for the academy graduate, who had developed through the ranks at Lille after emerging as one of the academy’s promising defensive prospects.

Part of Wider Academy Exodus

Bayomog’s departure continues a concerning trend for Lille’s youth setup. The defender follows fellow prospects Kingsley Olufade and Jephthé Malanda through the exit door this summer. Olufade, 18, has signed for RC Strasbourg Alsace, while Malanda, also 18, has moved to Olympique de Marseille.

Losing Bayomog to Lens may prove particularly painful for Lille. The two clubs share a fierce regional rivalry, with Lens’s recent success partly built on a clear pathway from academy to first team. Players such as Ismaëlo Ganiou, Kyllian Antonio and Rayan Fofana have all made the breakthrough at Lens, offering young recruits a tangible route to senior football.

By contrast, Lille have historically dominated the region in terms of raw talent production, yet their current inability to retain emerging stars suggests a shift in dynamics. Bayomog’s switch across the divide highlights Lens’s growing reputation as a destination for developing players seeking early senior opportunities.

What Next for Bayomog?

The trainee arrangement will see Bayomog begin his professional development at Lens immediately, with the two-year term designed to bridge the gap between youth and senior football. The teenager will hope to follow the path of recent academy graduates who have already featured for the senior side.
