Surgery follows syndesmosis ligament damage
Tarek Buchmann has undergone surgery in Bavaria after sustaining a syndesmosis ligament injury, Bayern Munich have confirmed. The 21-year-old centre-back, who returned to the club this summer following a loan spell at 1.FC Nürnberg, will be sidelined until further notice as he begins his rehabilitation programme.
The German champions have not specified a return date for the defender. German publication BILD has speculated that Buchmann could face approximately four months on the sidelines, though Bayern emphasise that this timeframe depends on his rehabilitation progress and whether any complications arise during recovery.
Injury-plagued spell at Bayern
This latest setback continues a troubling pattern of physical problems that have disrupted Buchmann’s development since he joined Bayern’s senior ranks. The defender has previously endured muscle tears alongside shoulder and foot issues, limiting his opportunities to establish himself in the first team.
Buchmann signed professional terms with Bayern in 2021 after progressing through the youth system. The loan move to second-tier Nürnberg last season was intended to provide the regular match experience he could not secure in Munich due to his fitness record. His return to the Allianz Arena presented an opportunity to compete for defensive minutes under new manager Vincent Kompany, particularly with the club competing in multiple competitions.
Defensive depth tested
The absence of the Germany youth international reduces Kompany’s options at centre-back for the opening months of the campaign. Syndesmosis injuries, which affect the ligaments stabilising the ankle joint, typically require careful management to ensure complete healing before a player resumes full training.
Bayern will monitor Buchmann’s recovery closely in Bavaria, with the medical team providing updates as he reaches specific rehabilitation milestones. Should the layoff extend toward the winter transfer window, the club may need to evaluate whether their existing defensive roster offers sufficient cover for the demands of domestic and European football.
