Borussia Dortmund are on the verge of securing the signature of Japanese youth international Takato Yamamoto from Gamba Osaka. The 18-year-old central midfielder is expected to complete a loan move to the Bundesliga club that includes an option to buy, according to reports from German outlet Ruhr Nachrichten.

Yamamoto operates primarily as a creative, attack-minded number eight. Despite his youth, he has already accumulated six senior appearances for his current club in Japan’s top flight. He has also represented his country at Under-19 level, marking him as one to watch in his age group.

Gradual Integration Planned

The teenager’s immediate assignment will see him feature for Dortmund’s Regionalliga side, the club’s reserve team that competes in Germany’s fourth tier. This pathway is designed to aid his adaptation to European football while maintaining regular competitive minutes against senior opposition.

However, Yamamoto will not be confined solely to reserve-team duties during his opening months. Due to the absence of several first-team players currently on international duty at the World Cup, he is set to join senior training sessions during pre-season preparations. He will also travel with the senior squad for their Asia tour, scheduled to run from 26 July to 3 August.

The arrangement offers Dortmund flexibility to evaluate the midfielder in their environment before committing to a permanent transfer, while providing Yamamoto with a structured entry point into one of Europe’s most renowned development systems. The loan structure mitigates immediate financial risk whilst allowing the player to prove himself at a higher level.
