Swiss international Breel Embolo is reportedly poised to complete a transfer to Major League Soccer, with Atlanta United close to securing his signature from Stade Rennais for a fee exceeding €17 million.
According to Ouest-France, an agreement between the 29-year-old striker and the MLS franchise has already been reached. The Switzerland international, who has earned 92 caps and scored 26 goals for his country, possessed a fixed release clause that became active during this summer window.
Embolo arrived at the Ligue 1 club only last summer following three seasons with AS Monaco. Operating primarily as a centre-forward, he enjoyed a productive 2025-26 campaign, registering 10 goals and three assists across 34 appearances in all competitions. His domestic form secured his selection for Switzerland’s World Cup squad, where he contributed two goals and two assists in six tournament outings.
Major investment for Atlanta
The reported fee of just over €17 million would rank Embolo as the second most expensive signing in Atlanta United’s history. The club’s record acquisition remains fellow striker Emmanuel Latte Lath, whom they purchased from Middlesbrough for approximately €21 million in January 2025.
The impending deal signals Atlanta’s continued willingness to invest heavily in proven attacking talent. By meeting Embolo’s release clause, the MLS side would secure a player with substantial experience across Europe’s top leagues and international competition.
Brief but impactful Rennes spell
For Stade Rennais, the transfer would conclude a short but effective association. Embolo’s 13 goal involvements in a single season demonstrated his value, yet the release clause always presented the possibility of an early exit. The club must now consider replacing his offensive output ahead of the new campaign.
Should the move cross the line as anticipated, Embolo will depart French football after just one year, bringing physicality and international pedigree to his new environment in the United States.
