Haiti international Carlens Arcus, 30, has reflected on a significant period in his career, encompassing his nation’s historic return to the FIFA World Cup and their upcoming CONCACAF Nations League quarter-final against the United States. The Angers SCO defender also discussed his club’s recent tactical shift in Ligue 1.
Haiti’s World Cup Pride and Nations League Challenge
Arcus fulfilled a long-held dream by representing Haiti at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the nation’s first appearance in the tournament in 52 years. Despite three group stage defeats, Arcus expressed immense pride in the achievement. “Playing in a World Cup with my country? I couldn’t have hoped for anything better,” he stated, highlighting the emotional impact on the Haitian community.
The defender believes Haitian football is currently experiencing a period of growth, driven by a motivated squad and an energetic coaching staff. This momentum has seen Haiti qualify for the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-finals for the first time in their history. They are set to face the United States in November.
Arcus views the upcoming clash as a “major challenge” that the team approaches with confidence. However, Haiti will once again play away from home due to a lack of international standard sports facilities and the country’s security situation. The first leg of the quarter-final will be hosted in Miami, an arrangement Arcus acknowledges is frustrating but does not diminish the team’s resolve.
“It would be a lie to say it doesn’t affect us,” Arcus conceded regarding playing away. “But when we wear this shirt, no matter where we are, we have to play with the desire to represent Haiti’s colours with the utmost pride and passion.”
Leadership Role for the National Team
Adding to his national team responsibilities, Arcus was entrusted with the captain’s armband for Haiti in September. Having been part of the national squad for a decade, he described the appointment as “definitely an achievement, a great honour.” Arcus, a 60-time international, emphasised that while the role is significant, his commitment to the team remains constant, regardless of whether he retains the captaincy.
Angers’ Defensive Shift in Ligue 1
Before rejoining the national team, Arcus is focused on his club duties with Angers SCO. The club has endured a challenging start to the Ligue 1 season, currently sitting 14th in the table after eight matchdays. This period included heavy defeats, a 5-1 loss to Stade Brestois 29 and a 5-2 defeat against Olympique de Marseille.
However, Angers recently halted their poor run of form with a 0-0 draw away at FC Lorient. This solid performance was notable for the introduction of a five-man defence, a tactical adjustment praised by Arcus. “We achieved what we’d set out to do, which was to keep a clean sheet,” he explained. “We’d really focused on the defensive side of things, because we’d conceded a lot of goals in the last two matches. Keeping a clean sheet did us a world of good, particularly mentally.”
Arcus highlighted the team’s readiness to adapt to different strategies, stating that Angers is prepared to follow the coaching staff’s instructions and offer varied tactical approaches in upcoming matches.
