Stade Rennais defender Charlie Cresswell has openly shared his ambition to represent England at senior international level, describing it as his “biggest dream”. The 24-year-old centre-back, who has been a consistent presence for the England U21s, is now focused on making the step up to the Three Lions’ main squad.
A Strong Foundation with the U21s
Cresswell has a notable track record with England’s youth setup. He was a regular fixture in the England U21 defence and played a key role in the side’s success, becoming a two-time European champion at that level. His performances for the U21s have provided a solid platform as he eyes a future in the senior team.
Inspired by English Talent Abroad
The defender draws significant inspiration from fellow English players who have ventured abroad and subsequently earned call-ups to the senior national team. He specifically mentioned Jarell Quansah and Trevoh Chalobah as examples of players who have successfully navigated this path.
Speaking about his aspirations, Cresswell stated, “I’ve always said since I was a kid, it’s my biggest, biggest dream to play for my country. All I can do is carry on working.” He added that seeing other English players thrive overseas and gain national team recognition provides motivation. “It gives you hope. It gives you motivation that, if you’re doing well abroad, they’ll give you a look, and they’ll give you a chance,” Cresswell explained.
Cresswell’s focus remains on his club performances with Stade Rennais, believing that consistent strong displays will ultimately pave the way for his senior England debut.
