Chelsea agree €48m deal for Ahanor
Chelsea have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign defender Honest Ahanor in a deal worth approximately €48 million including performance bonuses. The 18-year-old Italy international will become the second player to move from the Bergamo club to Stamford Bridge this summer, following the earlier arrival of Marco Palestra.
Multiple Italian sources indicate the clubs finalised the broad terms on Thursday, with only the specific triggers for bonus payments left to negotiate. The total package marks a substantial return for Atalanta, who paid Genoa €16 million plus add-ons and a five per cent sell-on clause to acquire the teenager just twelve months ago.
From Genoa academy to Azzurri debut
Ahanor developed through Genoa’s youth system before making the switch to Atalanta in the summer of 2024. Despite his tender age and relatively limited senior experience—totalling 28 Serie A appearances, nine Champions League outings and four Coppa Italia matches—he has already broken into the Italy national team, earning his first senior cap in June.
Primarily a central defender, Ahanor offers positional flexibility having also featured at left-back and in more advanced wide roles. This versatility, combined with his rapid progression through the Italian youth ranks into the senior international setup, has attracted Chelsea’s recruitment team despite his lack of extensive top-flight exposure.
Brighton loan likely
Although Chelsea intend to complete a permanent transfer, the London club are expected to loan Ahanor out for the upcoming season to ensure he gains regular first-team football. Brighton and Hove Albion have emerged as a possible destination within the Premier League, though the final decision on his temporary club remains pending.
The structure of the deal reflects Chelsea’s strategy of investing in emerging talent with long-term potential while managing their immediate integration into the senior squad. For Atalanta, the transaction represents a significant profit on a player they owned for just one year, underlining their reputation for maximising value in the transfer market.
