Chrislain Matsima has reached a verbal agreement to join Crystal Palace from FC Augsburg, according to reports. The 24-year-old French centre-back is poised to make the switch to South London as the Eagles accelerate their summer recruitment drive.
Defensive Reinforcement Priority
Crystal Palace are prioritising defensive reinforcements ahead of the new Premier League season. The club expect to lose Maxence Lacroix to Chelsea, creating an immediate requirement for centre-back cover within Oliver Glasner’s squad.
Matsima has emerged as the preferred candidate to strengthen Palace’s backline. The former France youth international joined Augsburg from AS Monaco just last summer but could depart the Bundesliga after only one season in Germany.
Monaco Ties and Augsburg Spell
The defender developed through the prestigious AS Monaco academy, and the Principality club maintain a significant stake in his future. Monaco hold a 15 per cent sell-on clause entitling them to a portion of any profit from his transfer to Selhurst Park.
Despite arriving in Germany only 12 months ago, Matsima established himself as a key figure in the Augsburg defence. He made 20 appearances across all competitions last term, starting 19 of those matches and demonstrating his reliability when fit.
His campaign was disrupted by a serious tendon injury sustained in January, which kept him out for several months. The defender managed to recover in time to feature during the closing weeks of the season, ensuring he ended the campaign with substantial first-team experience.
Deal Progression
Although personal terms have been settled between Matsima and Crystal Palace, the transfer requires completion of the agreement between the two clubs and a successful medical. The move would represent a significant step up for the 24-year-old, offering him the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League.
With pre-season training already underway, Palace will hope to conclude negotiations swiftly to integrate their new defensive acquisition into Glasner’s preparations for the upcoming campaign.
