Côte d’Ivoire head coach Emerse Faé has challenged remarks by Bastian Schweinsteiger characterising African football as “unorthodox” and “wild” during analysis of Germany’s World Cup clash with the Elephants. The former Germany international’s assessment has drawn accusations of racial stereotyping, prompting Faé to defend his team’s tactical credentials.
Schweinsteiger, working as a television pundit, suggested the Ivorian approach was unpredictable and “not so conditioned by tactics”. His comments following the 2026 World Cup fixture implied that African teams posed primarily a physical challenge rather than a strategic one, describing their football as difficult to prepare against due to its apparent lack of structure.
Faé hopes remarks were ‘clumsy’
Speaking at his pre-match press conference before facing Curaçao, Faé expressed visible disappointment despite acknowledging Schweinsteiger’s decorated playing career. The coach noted he had previously admired the former midfielder’s understanding of the game, making the analysis particularly surprising coming from someone he considered tactically astute.
Faé acknowledged that the description could be interpreted as racist if judged harshly, suggesting observers might view it as prejudice if “calling a spade a spade”.
