David Kinsombi has completed his return to the 3. Liga, signing for Würzburger Kickers as a free agent. The 30-year-old defensive midfielder joins the newly-promoted third-tier side after his contract with SC Paderborn expired this summer, ending a three-year stay at the club.
Proven second-tier pedigree
The transfer represents a significant homecoming for Kinsombi, who last appeared in the 3. Liga a decade ago. Since then, he has accumulated substantial experience in Germany’s higher divisions, making 238 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga. His CV also includes a brief taste of top-flight football, having played four Bundesliga matches for Eintracht Frankfurt before moving to 1. FC Magdeburg in 2016.
During the most recent campaign, Kinsombi featured three times for Paderborn as they mounted a promotion challenge. His versatility and defensive capabilities will provide Würzburger Kickers with proven quality as they navigate life back in the third tier.
Family on the move
The signing continues an active summer for the Kinsombi family in German football. David’s younger brother, Christian Kinsombi, recently joined Energie Cottbus from Hansa Rostock ahead of their return to the 2. Bundesliga. The siblings previously played alongside each other at SV Sandhausen, though their time as teammates was brief.
Würzburger Kickers have secured Kinsombi’s services without paying a transfer fee, acquiring a player with extensive experience at levels above their current standing.
