Diego Forlán is set to become Uruguay‘s interim manager until March 2027 following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa. The former Manchester United striker will also oversee the national under-20 team during his temporary tenure with La Celeste.

The Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) moved to confirm the appointment after Bielsa left his post in the wake of Uruguay’s disappointing World Cup campaign. The national team managed just two draws from three matches and failed to progress beyond the group stage, marking a significant underachievement for a side with high expectations.

Bielsa Accepts Responsibility

Bielsa departed after publicly accepting responsibility for the team’s poor showing. Reports suggested tensions within the dressing room had emerged during the tournament, complicating an already difficult campaign. The Argentine coach had successfully guided Uruguay through the qualification process but could not replicate that competitive form on the global stage.

Stepping Up from Club Level

Forlán faces a considerable challenge despite his celebrated playing career. The 47-year-old has previously managed just two clubs: Peñarol in 2020 and second-tier side Atenas in 2021. These brief spells offered limited preparation for international management, yet the AUF has turned to the former forward during this transitional period.

During his playing days, Forlán earned 112 international caps and scored 36 goals for Uruguay. His standout moment came at the 2010 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot after leading the side to the semi-finals. He retired from international duty in 2014 following successful spells with Villarreal, Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan.

Deal Finalisation

AUF president Ignacio Alonso told television channel Teledoce that Forlán is eager to take charge. He indicated that formal confirmation would follow within hours as negotiations conclude between the federation and the former striker.

The dual appointment suggests the federation views Forlán as a figurehead capable of bridging the senior and youth setups during this rebuild. With March 2027 marked as the end point of his interim status, the coming months will determine whether the celebrated forward can translate his on-field success into tangible managerial results for the national team.
