Edin Džeko remains absent from Schalke’s pre-season preparations as negotiations over a contract extension have stalled. The 40-year-old Bosnian forward, who signed a six-month deal in January, played a crucial role in firing the Royal Blues back to the Bundesliga.
Džeko negotiations hit impasse
Despite both parties expressing a desire to continue their partnership, discussions have failed to progress. Schalke manager Miron Muslić struck an optimistic tone when questioned about recent developments. However, German outlet kicker reports that significant gaps remain between the club and the player’s representatives, even though Schalke had previously indicated willingness to meet the veteran’s demands.
Gosens debuts in Austrian friendly victory
While Džeko’s future remains unresolved, Schalke continued their preparations with a 3-1 victory over Japanese top-flight side Fagiano Okayama in Stubaital, Austria. The newly-promoted Bundesliga club fell behind within the opening quarter-hour before responding through goals from Hasan Kuruçay, captain Kenan Karaman and recent signing Junior Adamu.
The fixture marked the first appearance of Robin Gosens, who joined on loan from Fiorentina earlier this summer. The Germany international, previously a teammate of Džeko during their time in Italy, featured as Schalke concluded their week-long training camp in the Austrian Alps.
Pre-season schedule continues
Schalke now turn their attention to a friendly fixture against Regionalliga side KSV Hessen Kassel next week. The Gelsenkirchen club will hope to resolve Džeko’s situation before the new Bundesliga campaign begins, with the striker’s experience considered vital for their top-flight survival bid.
