Eliaquim Mangala has announced his retirement from professional football aged 35. The former Manchester City defender moves immediately into coaching, joining the backroom staff at French Ligue 2 club AS Saint-Étienne.

This marks Mangala’s first step into management. He will work alongside Ian Cathro as part of the coaching team tasked with guiding Les Verts back to Ligue 1.

From record signing to the dugout

Mangala’s playing career included one of the most high-profile transfers in Premier League history. Manchester City paid €45 million to sign him from Porto in 2014, making him the world’s most expensive defender at that time.

The France international also enjoyed a spell with Saint-Étienne prior to hanging up his boots. His return to the club now sees him transition from centre-back to coach without an interval.

Guardiola’s influence

The defender has cited Pep Guardiola as the catalyst for his managerial ambitions. Mangala worked under the Catalan coach during his time at Manchester City.

Speaking to Get French Football News in October 2022, Mangala explained how Guardiola’s methods convinced him to pursue coaching. “After having played under him, I had more of a desire to become a manager,” he said.

He highlighted Guardiola’s analytical approach and psychological management. “It isn’t necessarily his playing style, because that can change, but his approach. Why do we play like that? Why make this particular movement and how are we going to do it?”

Mangala also praised Guardiola’s handling of the mental side of the game. “Throughout the week, there are his speeches, the way he approaches you to keep your feet on the ground. It’s everything, really. The way I received it really opened my eyes.”

The Saint-Étienne project

Saint-Étienne currently compete in France’s second tier following relegation. The club are pushing for an immediate return to the top flight, with Cathro leading the technical staff.

Mangala’s arrival adds significant top-level playing experience to the coaching setup. His familiarity with the club, having worn the green shirt as a player, offers immediate institutional knowledge.

The Frenchman’s transition follows a growing trend of former elite players moving directly into backroom roles. His success at Saint-Étienne will depend on translating Guardiola-inspired tactical concepts to the demands of Ligue 2 football.
