Southampton manager Tonda Eckert remains in professional limbo with the Football Association yet to conclude its disciplinary investigation into the spygate scandal that derailed the club’s promotion bid.
The 33-year-old German faces the prospect of a 12-month suspension from all football activity as the governing body weighs individual sanctions. Southampton have already suffered severe consequences, having been expelled from last season’s Championship play-off final against Hull and ordered to serve a four-point deduction when the new campaign begins.
Systematic espionage admitted
In May, the English Football League found that Eckert had “specifically authorised” clandestine operations against three opponents. A 23-year-old intern, William Salt, was deployed to spy on Middlesbrough ahead of the play-off semi-final first leg at the Riverside. Similar operations targeted Oxford and Ipswich during the regular season.
The EFL’s independent disciplinary commission described the scheme as a deliberate plan orchestrated from the highest level to obtain illicit information for sporting advantage. It singled out the pressure placed upon Salt as “particularly deplorable”. Salt has reportedly been offered a permanent analyst role in Southampton’s academy.
FA powers and precedent
While the EFL lacked authority to punish individuals, the FA possesses wider disciplinary powers. It may follow a FIFA precedent set in 2024 when Canada women’s coach Bev Priestman received a 12-month ban for her role in using a drone to spy on New Zealand at the Paris Olympics. Two of Priestman’s staff received identical suspensions.
The EFL commission explicitly cited the “Canada case” in its written judgment. Eckert, previously an analyst with Germany’s national team, was interviewed at length by the FA at the start of July.
Uncertain future
Despite speculation of dismissal in May, owner Dragan Solak has publicly supported the manager. Solak stated earlier this summer that Eckert had made a mistake, apologised and deserved a second chance.
Eckert is expected to face the media on Saturday when Southampton play their first pre-season friendly at non-league neighbours Eastleigh. With the Championship season beginning at Watford on 16 August, the coming weeks will prove critical in determining whether Eckert will occupy the dugout for the campaign opener.
