Bayer Leverkusen have completed the signing of Argentine defender Facundo Medina from Olympique de Marseille on a long-term contract running until 2031. The 27-year-old becomes the latest addition to the Bundesliga champions’ squad as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
The centre-back arrived at Marseille only last summer, joining on loan from RC Lens with an option to buy included in the arrangement. Despite this pathway to permanence, persistent fitness issues prevented him from establishing himself as a regular fixture in the southern French side.
Injury-hit season curtails Marseille stay
A recurring ankle injury severely limited Medina’s availability during his single season with Les Phocéens. The problem restricted him to just 26 appearances across all competitions, with his participation particularly sparse during 2025. Medical setbacks ruled him out of all but five matches for the club that year, of which he managed to play in only four.
The fitness problems disrupted Medina’s integration into the squad and prevented him from building consistent momentum. When available, the left-sided defender provided cover in central defence, but he could not maintain the rhythm required to become a mainstay. However, upon returning to full fitness in 2026, he rapidly reclaimed his place in the starting eleven. His performances during this resurgence demonstrated the quality that had initially attracted Marseille from Lens.
World Cup recognition precedes German switch
The defender’s form following his recovery earned him a place in Argentina’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Medina contributed to the Albiceleste’s run to the tournament final, though he ultimately finished on the losing side and returned home without the trophy.
Upon initially joining Marseille, Medina had expressed lofty ambitions for his time in France, telling local publication La Provence that he was “coming to OM to win titles.” He departs, however, with an empty trophy cabinet, forming part of the club’s outgoing transfer activity as they reshape their squad following a disappointing campaign.
Leverkusen will hope that the six-year commitment provides Medina with the stability to build upon his post-injury form. The extended contract suggests the German club have confidence that the Argentine can overcome his previous fitness troubles and establish himself as a reliable option in their defensive ranks. The deal strengthens their resources as the club targets continued success in domestic competition and European tournaments.
