Fikayo Tomori has rejected a proposed transfer to Coventry City, leaving AC Milan searching for alternative buyers as they attempt to cash in on the defender this summer.
The 28-year-old centre-back is surplus to requirements under new head coach Ruben Amorim at San Siro. With his contract running until June 2027, the Italian club are keen to sell now to recover some of the €36 million they paid Chelsea in 2021. Delaying any further would significantly reduce their negotiating power and the potential transfer fee.
Premier League rejection
Coventry City, who secured promotion to the Premier League, had explored a deal for the England international. The newly promoted side can meet Milan’s asking price of €15-20 million. A move would have reunited Tomori with Frank Lampard, who managed the defender during their time together at Stamford Bridge.
However, Italian reports indicate Tomori views a switch to the Midlands outfit as a significant step down from Serie A. He has opted to wait for more attractive proposals rather than link up with his former Chelsea boss at this stage of his career.
Pattern of selective moves
This is not the first time the defender has turned down a Premier League opportunity. In 2025, he rejected a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur despite terms being agreed between the clubs, demonstrating a pattern of holding out for specific career moves.
Tomori’s stance leaves Milan in a difficult position. They must balance their desire to recoup funds against the player’s reluctance to join clubs he considers beneath his current standing. With two years remaining on his deal, the Rossoneri risk losing value if they cannot find a suitable buyer before the window closes.
The defender appears willing to bide his time rather than accept a move that does not match his ambitions, forcing Milan to either lower their demands or hope that a more prestigious club enters the race for his signature.
