Serie A newcomers Frosinone have announced the sale of an 80 per cent stake to Clara Vista, the American investment group that holds majority ownership of Premier League club Ipswich Town. The transaction, which sees Clara Vista acquire the bulk of President Maurizio Stirpe’s shares, is reported to be worth €41.5 million (approximately £35 million).

Stirpe will retain the remaining 20 per cent of the Lazio-based club and continue as President for at least two more years. The arrangement concludes 23 years of majority ownership under the Stirpe family, who have controlled the club since 2003.

End of the Stirpe era

The Stirpe name has been central to Frosinone’s identity since the 1960s. Benito Stirpe served as President alongside his brother Roberto from 1965 to 1967, before Maurizio took the reins following bankruptcy proceedings in 2003. Under his leadership, the Canarini have navigated financial difficulties and secured multiple promotions to Italian football’s top tier.

Frosinone secured an immediate return to Serie A this summer by finishing second in Serie B behind Venezia. The club will now compete in the top flight with substantial new backing, as the €41.5 million injection is earmarked for both infrastructure improvements and squad reinforcement.

International investment

Clara Vista enter Italian football with established credentials. The company oversaw Ipswich Town’s recent promotion from the Championship to the Premier League, demonstrating their capacity to guide clubs through crucial development phases. Their acquisition of Frosinone creates a trans-European football portfolio.

The capital injection is expected to fund infrastructure projects and squad improvements as the club adapt to the demands of Serie A. The new governance structure blends continuity with international expertise. While Stirpe remains President, Rosario Zoino will assume the role of chief executive officer. The board will comprise Bob Gold, Charlie Lambropoulos and Wills Hapworth alongside existing local figures.

Stirpe emphasised the long-term vision behind the deal. “With this Clara Vista sale, we can inject fresh liquidity to Frosinone,” he said. “I will remain as President for two years, Rosario Zoino will be CEO. This is not a short-term deal, at the end of the two years we’ll sit down and set out the plan for the future.”

The multi-club network could offer Frosinone access to shared scouting networks and player development pathways, potentially strengthening their competitive position as they seek to establish long-term stability in Serie A.
