England U21 forward Ethan Nwaneri has completed a season-long loan switch from Arsenal to Borussia Dortmund, with the deadline day move designed to fill the void left by Giannis Konstantelias. BVB head coach Niko Kovač immediately backed the 19-year-old to succeed, revealing that the Bundesliga club had already attempted to bring him in last year.

Kovač explained that a previous approach for the teenager failed to materialise, but the loss of Konstantelias to a torn cruciate ligament forced Dortmund to revisit the deal. Speaking after Tuesday’s 5-0 DFB-Pokal victory over HEBC Hamburg, the coach said the situation meant they simply “had to react.”

Kovač Praises Nwaneri’s Direct Style

The Croatian boss outlined the technical profile Dortmund pursued during their brief search. He indicated that the squad required an attacker with pace, strong dribbling ability and the confidence to take on defenders in one-on-one situations. Kovač described the teenager as a “very good young player” and stated he is “convinced that he will” meet the club’s expectations throughout the campaign.

Nwaneri Drawn by BVB’s Youth Record

Nwaneri admitted the switch gathered momentum within hours once the German side declared their interest. “Everything moved very quickly,” he recalled, noting that advanced talks were underway behind the scenes shortly after his first meeting with the club. “I was ready to make the move,” he added.

Before committing, Nwaneri consulted fellow England U21 international Jobe Bellingham, who had been lobbying him to sign. Nwaneri said Bellingham repeatedly insisted he “should come to BVB” and welcomed the prospect of the pair now “playing side by side.”

The Arsenal loanee also cited Dortmund’s history of developing young prospects as a major influence. He praised the “crazy stadium,” the famous supporter culture and the pathway that allows players to mature “as people and as men” before advancing their careers. He argued that this holistic approach “sets our club apart.”

With Konstantelias sidelined for the foreseeable future, Nwaneri is expected to compete for minutes in Dortmund’s attack this term. The loan represents his first spell of senior football away from English shores and offers an early test of his ability to adapt to the Bundesliga under Kovač.
