Genoa have unveiled their home kit for the 2026-27 season, drawing inspiration from one of the most celebrated nights in the club’s history. The new jersey commemorates the 35th anniversary of their triumph over Liverpool at Anfield, a result that made them the first Italian side ever to win on Merseyside.
A Historic Night at Anfield
The victory in March 1992 remains a defining moment for the Grifone. Carlos Aguilera scored both goals as Genoa secured a 2-1 win against Liverpool in the second leg of their UEFA Cup tie. The result completed a 4-1 aggregate success, sending the Italian club through to the semi-finals of the competition.
Until that evening, no Italian team had managed to defeat Liverpool on their home turf. The achievement marked a watershed moment for Genoa and represented a significant breakthrough for Italian football in European competition during the early 1990s.
Reunited for the Campaign
Kombat, the kit manufacturer, has designed the jersey to honour this legacy. The launch video carries the title “you’ll never run alone,” a deliberate play on Liverpool’s famous anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone.
The advertising campaign brought together several players who featured in that famous match. Tomas Skuhravy, Mario Bortolazzi, Armando Ferroni, Vincenzo Torrente and Gennaro Ruotolo all participated in the promotional material. The video also pays tribute to former captain Gianluca Signorini and defender Andrea Fortunato, both of whom were instrumental during that successful European campaign but have since passed away.
Aguilera, whose brace secured the historic result at Anfield, features prominently in the clip, which includes the original commentary from Bruno Pizzul. The celebration of this particular victory underscores its enduring place in Genoa’s folklore, offering supporters a tangible connection to a glorious chapter in the club’s past as they look toward the future.
