United hold Koné talks but stop short of formal bid
Manchester United have opened discussions with Manu Koné’s representatives as they pursue further midfield reinforcements, though the Premier League club have not yet submitted a formal offer to AS Roma.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that United executives held telephone contact with the France international’s agents this week. The approach signals concrete interest in the 25-year-old, who has just completed his second season in the Italian capital and featured for France at the 2026 World Cup.
Roma’s financial pressure
The Serie A side value Koné at approximately €55 million, a figure reinforced by their refusal to sanction a €45 million transfer to Inter last summer. Roma’s owners blocked that move despite advanced negotiations, suggesting they remain unwilling to accept lower offers twelve months later.
Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has acknowledged the club’s delicate position, stating it is “undeniable that Roma have to balance the books”. He added: “I hope that reaching the Champions League will be enough, but it is clear that balance sheets are essential for clubs, and there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”
These comments indicate that while Roma ideally wish to retain the former Toulouse midfielder, financial constraints may necessitate a sale to fund recruitment and satisfy liquidity requirements.
Arsenal interest and United’s midfield plans
United face competition for Koné’s signature. L’Équipe report that Arsenal maintain interest in the player, who reached the World Cup semi-finals with France earlier this month.
The Red Devils have already secured Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans during the current window. They also abandoned a move for Atalanta’s Éderson following medical assessments, leaving space in their midfield plans for a further addition.
With Koné’s international commitments now concluded, negotiations between United and the player’s camp are expected to continue. However, any transfer would require United to meet Roma’s valuation and navigate the Italian club’s need to generate significant transfer revenue.
