Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini has significantly cooled speculation linking free agent Wilfried Zaha with a move to the Italian capital, expressing unenthusiasm about potential late signings from the free-agent market.
Reports had recently suggested that Zaha, who became available after his contract with Galatasaray expired in June, was among the names Roma were considering to bolster their left-sided attack. However, Gasperini’s latest comments indicate a shift in the club’s approach.
Gasperini’s Stance on Free Agents
Speaking at a press conference, Gasperini addressed the possibility of turning to the free-agent market directly. “I think it is difficult, I don’t know what opportunities there could be. I wouldn’t count on it too much,” he stated, dampening expectations for any immediate arrivals.
This assessment is particularly noteworthy given that Gasperini had actively pushed Roma to strengthen their options on the left wing throughout the summer transfer window. The club ultimately failed to secure his preferred profile before the window closed, leading to the consideration of the free-agent pool as a final opportunity.
Zaha, with his experience and availability, had emerged as an intriguing prospect for the Giallorossi. Other players like Raphael Guerreiro and Krépin Diatta were also reportedly under consideration as Roma explored options for a left-sided attacker.
Uncertainty for Zaha’s Future
When pressed further on the market for wing options, Gasperini remained cautious. “I don’t know, it will be evaluated. I’m not so confident, but we’ll see if there is some opportunity,” he added. While the coach has not explicitly ruled out Zaha or any other free agent, his repeated reluctance to rely on this market represents a significant change from the speculation that circulated just 24 hours prior.
