Inter Milan have entered the race to sign Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, joining Serie A rivals Juventus in monitoring the Colombia international as he approaches the final months of his contract.

According to Sportitalia pundit Alfredo Pedulla, Inter have made contact with Bologna to request information on the defender’s availability. The Nerazzurri are actively seeking experienced defensive reinforcements following the departures of long-serving centre-backs Francesco Acerbi and Stefan de Vrij, whose contracts expired on 30 June.

Lucumi, who turned 28 earlier this month, has established himself as a reliable presence in Serie A since joining the Rossoblu from Belgian club KRC Genk for €8 million in the summer of 2022. He has since accumulated 123 league appearances and demonstrated consistent form at the heart of Bologna’s defence.

Bologna’s stance

Despite Lucumi’s contract running only until the end of the current campaign, Bologna are holding firm on their valuation. The club are reportedly unwilling to accept offers significantly below his €28 million release clause, even though they risk losing the player for nothing should he see out his deal and depart as a free agent.

Juventus maintain strong interest in securing Lucumi’s services, while Turkish side Besiktas and Premier League club Bournemouth have also been linked with moves. The Colombian nearly transferred to Sunderland last season but ultimately remained in Italy.

Inter’s defensive rebuild

For Inter, the €28 million asking price represents a more economical option than alternative targets. The Milan club were reportedly quoted approximately €35 million for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, making Lucumi a comparatively affordable solution as they look to strengthen their backline.

The player’s extensive Serie A experience appeals to clubs seeking immediate defensive contributions without the uncertainty of adapting to Italian tactical demands. With the transfer window remaining open, the competition between Inter and Juventus for Lucumi’s signature could intensify, though Bologna’s refusal to negotiate below the release clause may prove a significant obstacle to any imminent departure.
