Inter Milan have dropped their interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur right-back Djed Spence, according to reports in Italy. The Serie A champions had considered the England international as a potential replacement for Denzel Dumfries, but will not pursue a deal at the current asking price.
The Nerazzurri are searching for a new right wing-back after Real Madrid activated the release clause for Dutch international Dumfries earlier this summer. Manager Cristian Chivu needs reinforcements in that position ahead of the new season.
Spence, 25, impressed during the 2026 World Cup under England manager Thomas Tuchel and had emerged as a candidate for Inter. The defender previously gained experience in Serie A during a loan spell at Genoa. However, Sport Mediaset journalist Orazio Accomando reports that Tottenham are demanding approximately €47 million (£40m) for the full-back. Inter consider this figure prohibitive as they look to strengthen multiple positions this transfer window.
Alternative targets fall through
The club’s recruitment difficulties in this position extend beyond Spence. Inter had identified Italy youth international Marco Palestra as their priority target at the start of the window, but a €60m offer from Chelsea removed that option.
A separate deal for Union Saint-Gilloise winger Anan Khalaili also fell through after medical concerns emerged during the player’s examination.
Search continues
With Spence now ruled out, Inter must continue their search for defensive reinforcements elsewhere. The club had agreed terms with Union Saint-Gilloise for Khalaili before that transfer collapsed, demonstrating their urgency to fill the void left by Dumfries’s departure to the Bernabéu.
