Italian football is facing a period of significant instability, with the search for a new national team coach descending into what domestic media have described as “total chaos”. Paolo Maldini, the technical director, is reportedly considering stepping down from his role amid fierce debate over the potential appointment of Andrea Pirlo, while his colleague Leonardo is also contemplating resignation.
National Team Uncertainty
Pirlo’s candidacy to become Italy’s next Commissario Tecnico has sparked considerable controversy within the federation. Maldini has staunchly defended the former midfielder’s credentials, though sources suggest he is prepared to resign if his preferred choice is overlooked. The appointment could reportedly be announced imminently, though obstacles remain, including what has been termed the “Russian issue”.
Should Pirlo’s proposal fail, alternative candidates including Roberto Mancini, Antonio Conte and Stefano Pioli are understood to remain under consideration.
Transfer Market Developments
The domestic uncertainty has not halted club activity in the transfer market. Inter Milan are reportedly pushing to secure goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez from Aston Villa, with the Argentina international identified as the priority target.
Roma, meanwhile, are working to sign an attacker for a fee in the region of €35 million, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani mentioned as a possibility ahead of a decisive meeting with the French club. The capital club are also monitoring goalkeeper options including Zion Suzuki and Guglielmo Vicario.
Juventus are confronting pre-season concerns regarding squad depth. The club have reportedly proposed Manchester City defender John Stones once again, whilst the trail leading to Jhon Lucumí remains active. Defender Riccardo Cambiaso has indicated he may remain with the club rather than seek a move, whilst Gleison Bremer has returned to training and is showing positive signals.
Elsewhere, Frosinone face pressing issues with the season approaching in 27 days, as the Serie B side currently lack both a recognised goalkeeper and a centre-forward. Artem Dovbyk is reportedly considering his future, with a loan move to Bologna emerging as a possibility.
Player Welfare Campaign
Away from managerial and transfer speculation, former Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane has called for enhanced brain protection protocols during players’ developmental phases. His stance has received support from medical professionals including Dr Tencone within the Italian game.
